Get your gorram frakking shtako hands off my phone!

I created this wallpaper for my phone’s lock screen the other on a whim.  Guess I was feeling a bit punchy and quite a bit geeky.  If you’re a true sci-fi fan, you’ll recognize the references to Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, and Defiance.

Want it for your own phone?
Click the image above to view it full size, then right click (or long press if you’re on an Android phone) and choose Save. Easy as pie! 🙂

I added two widgets to my screen using UCCW to display a teeny, subtle date and time.  The “unlock” function is a hidden slider thanks to Widgetlocker.

Here’s how it looks on my Nexus 4:

Rejoin the 2nd Mass! Falling Skies Returns Tonight

I’ve been anxiously awaiting the return of Falling Skies for what seems like eons. Season three premieres tonight at 9pm ET (8pm CT) on TNT! *happy dance!*

From the pretty-much-spoiler-free trailer below, it looks like many of our favorite 2nd Mass’ers are in for a helluva time. Heck, it looks like the Earth is in for a helluva time.

Falling Skies’ Season 3 Trailer:

An Exclusive Two Minute Preview of Season 3:
Warning… can be considered a spoiler since you’re getting to see two minutes of the premiere!

Will you be watching? Anyone gonna make Pope’s version of lemonade?

Here’s to lemons, grenades, and alien invasions,

DIY Hand-Painted Flower Pots

Looking for a quick and easy revamp for some of those old hard-foam flower pots you’ve got banging around the backyard?
Do-it-yourself: hand painted flower pot tutorial
Don’t pitch them! Even if they’re beat up a bit – those dents and dings are just distressing afterall, and we all know that is super-freaking-cool.

Supplies:

+  Flower pots! These two are those light-weight, hardish foam pots; but you could also paint up terracotta clay pots, ceramic pots, or even those plastic pots.
+  Satin finish spray paint.  I used Rustoleum in Black.
+  Craft, acrylic, or latex paints.  My colors: a medium green, a dark green, off-white/ivory, creamy yellow, and a very, very light pumpkin orange.
+  Cheapy craft paint brushes
+  A couple o’ paper towels

The How To:DIY painted flower pot tutorial - Dry brushing and highlight detail

  1. Grab your pots and rinse off any dirt.
  2. Let them dry… all the way.
  3. Spray paint the outside and bottoms of the pots.
  4. Repeat step 3.  I sprayed these pots with three light coats.
  5. Paint the leaves and flower stems with the dark green paint.
  6. Paint the flowers, including the centers, with the ivory paint.
  7. Dry brush the lighter medium green paint onto the stem centers (i.e. the highest point of the stems), leaf edges, details, etc. If you get too much paint on there, just dab it off with a paper towel.  You’re going for a rough, splotchy sort of highlight effect.
  8. Paint the centers of some flowers with the creamy yellow paint. Dab the centers, while still wet, with your paper towel for a worn effect.
  9. Use the creamy yellow paint to highlight the edges of some flower’s petals.
  10. Paint the centers of leftover flowers with the very light orange paint. Dab the centers, while still wet, with your paper towel for a worn effect.
  11. Use the light orange paint to highlight the rest of the flower petal edges.
  12. Add potting soil and plants…
  13. Enjoy!

Dry-brushing hint:  Load your brush with paint (just like normal). Brush it lightly across a paper towel to remove the majority of the paint. Proceed to paint. 🙂

Wishing you brilliant flowers & sunshine,

Melted Wax Becomes Photographic Art

Who knew a lava-flow of melted candle wax could be so interesting and inspiring???

Photo edits were accomplished using Android 4.2.2’s built-in image editor.

Can you tell which one is the original wax color?

Publix Fangirl Spots Awesome Graphic Designs

There are some many things I hate about living in Florida… except Publix Grocery Stores grocery stores. Ever since I was a tiny child, I have adored Publix. I love the old style stores, the new shiny stores, the scaled-down beach stores; the friendly employees; the 50s era weigh yourself scales; and their house-brand food offerings are simply delicious!

The Publix gods must have heard my inner desire when they created this new, limited edition ice cream flavor…
Black Swamp Raspberry Cheesecake!!

Not only is any variety of Cheesecake ice cream my favorite, but check out that stunning packaging!

And while cruising through the checkout lane, I spotted another gem of graphic design:
Gorgeous graphic design work from Publix grocery

I really love the color choices, the unique font and the modern-with-a-nod-to-retro scheme. I’m calling both designs a WIN.

Now hand me a dang spoon!

Happy Memorial Day y’all,
