Halloween at Kimber Hollow 2014

The Kimber Hollow 2014 art yard haunt video is *finally* live!

You may commence “The Wednesday (Addams) Dance” or “The Mamushka” or ”Thriller”…
Whichever makes you look scarier.

Truly though, I hope you enjoy the setup. I had a bad year (medical issues) so we had to set everything up in one day so most of the details we pride our design on didn’t get outst the house.

If you’ll be in the Gainesville Florida area for Halloween night 2015, we’d love to have you stop by, snap photos with the creepy ghouls or tombstones, and… Oh yes… They’ll be a TON of candy!
#HFL!!

Boo y’all,

2015 #AprilFoolsDay – Best of the Web

Did you know???

  • The earliest recorded mention of April Fools’ Day, way back in 1392, is in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales?
  • In 1957, the BBC aired a television show about farmers harvesting freshly grown spaghetti. The network was then bombarded with letters from viewers asking how they could purchase their very own spaghetti plant!
  • BBC struck again in 2008 when they aired an elaborate video documenting the discovery of flying penguins.

These days April Fools pranks are even more elaborate and widespread thanks to our BFF – The Internet. Over the past decade, Google has continued to raise the bar on jokes & pranks (some of their “pranks” have become actual products – ah hem, Gmail’s 1GB+ of storage space!). Each year more companies, such as ThinkGeek, Virgin America, and Netflix, join the fun.

So let’s nix the dilly-dallying, tip over this barrel of monkeys, and see what’s funny enough to send snizzlebiscuits & sweet tea flying out your nose…

Pac Man Fever

Fire up Google Maps either in your browser or Android or iOS and search for Arc de Triomphe… Zoom in a bit. Tap the Pac Man button. Run from Ghosts. Rinse and repeat.  Check out Google’s hints for more locales to munch ghosts, strawberries, and ubiquitous dots.

Halloween 2013 at Kimber Hollow!

It’s getting close to *that* time of year again! What time, you ask? Halloween, of course!

And since I just finished putting together the video for our 2013 yard haunt display, I thought I’d share it with my fellow Bionics.

This year we added a few new elements to our Halloween night “theater” production. My husband and I built and made pretty much all the props you see: the witch’s table, the fence, the tombstones, the Creeper Reaper (the tall dude with antlers), the “burning coals”, and the Apocalypse Pumpkins.

The biggest impact came from a old iron bell we found while hiking in the woods.  We used the bell as an interactive addition to the night.  Mark, a member of the Ghostfacers, had the trick or treaters ring the bell to scare ghosts away.  Hence… Jami, one of the resident ghosts, did quite a lot of running and screaming through the graveyard.

We also added the Creeper Reaper – a tall creature with large knobby hands, a bare skull, and antlers.  He loves to spend Halloween night brewing potions over hot coals.

Four Apocalypse Pumpkins joined our patch this year.  Last year, the sole resident was Erl Koenig.  The new pumpkins include: Root Bound, Malice & Chains, Collapse, and Erosion.  The tombstones and Apocalypse Pumpkins are my babies. The large pumpkins you see in the video are made from paper maché and paper maché clay. They take quite a bit of time (I’ll be starting a new one this weekend!), but it’s crazy fun to have my hands all mucked up with maché gunk. Love.

A Witch Table found its way onto Kimber Hollow’s porch.  But our witch is a tad different than most witches. She not only brews Lace Wing Flies, sells Goofer Dust to ward off hellhounds; but she also loves to write codes in binary and study lasers.

Details on our video:

  • The music is by Douglas Pipes, the song is “The Halloween School Bus Massacre” from the Trick ‘r Treat soundtrack. (Trick ‘r Treat is a film by Michael Dougherty – and a *must-see* for any Halloween fan!)
  • You can buy Pipes’ Trick ‘r Treat soundtrack on Amazon and iTunes.
  • You can watch the Trick ‘r Treat movie on Google Play or Vudu.
  • Video production by Studio Bionic.

Anyhow, I hope you enjoy the video. If you have questions on how a prop was built, please leave me a comment below. I’m always happy to help a fellow Halloween enthusiast!

Happy haunts,

P.S. 10 Gold Stars to anyone who can figure out the W.E.D. tombstone reference!!

Fave Song of the Week: I’m the One That’s Cool

I adore Felicia Day. I truly enjoy The Guild. And I’ve been a Whedon brothers fan-girl since before they were “cool“.

So when they teamed up to release this gem of a song “I’m the One That’s Cool”, I played it over and over, again for hours.
Fast forward two years later.
Present Day.
I still LOVE this song!

Like the characters featured in this music video, I was a complete dork in high school. And I actually still am. I’m completely comfortable with that fact. While I (thankfully) never got a toilet bowl swirly – I did get pushed in a pool, teased about my glasses, and dealt with bizarro rumors. But dag nab it, those things made me stronger… and geekier! *grin*

So this article is dedicated to my fellow geeks.
As for all you prom queen bitches… you can bite me,
Jami - author and editor of the Bionic Style blog
